Ever since returning from Cleveland last weekend, I cannot stop talking about the city. I went there for my best friend’s wedding thinking I would enjoy the weekend catching up with old friends and celebrating, but to my surprise, I ended up falling for the city of Cleveland. Whenever I visit a new destination, I like to play a little game and ask myself “would I ever want to live here?” Usually the answer is no. I love visiting, but I rarely can ever see myself wanting to up and move.
Cleveland was one exception. I know that sounds crazy, but there was just something about Cleveland that I was immediately drawn to! I can’t rave about it enough. The beaches, the food, the sunsets, the nightlife, all of it took me by surprise and now I want everyone to experience all that this great city has to offer! Below are the 7 reasons why you need to visit Cleveland.
1. The Lake
I’m a little embarrassed to admit that prior to my trip, I didn’t realize Cleveland was situated along the bank of Lake Erie. To my delight, our hotel was just a short walk to Edgewater Beach Park, so I got to spend a few hours to myself before my other friends arrived sitting by the shore and listening to the waves. If Sand isn’t your thing, there is a grassy area nearby that’s perfect for a picnic at sunset. Don’t worry about bringing food, the Edgewater Beach House offers up classic concession items as well as such as pork tacos, fried cauliflower, brisket and other yumminess. They also serve local beer and cocktails. Local events take place here regularly, so be sure to check the park’s website. The Edgewater Food Festival was going on while we were there. We didn’t have time to squeeze it in, but it looked like tons of fun!
2. The Islands
I didn’t learn this until after my trip, but there are several islands that are just a ferry ride away from Cleveland. Put-In-Bay, Kelley’s Island and Middle Bass Island are among the most popular and offer the most to do. From kayaking and biking to restaurants and wineries, the Lake Erie Islands are a great place to spend the day! To get there, drive to Catawba Island or Lakeside Marblehead and catch the ferry from there.
3. The People
Being from the Midwest and now living in New York, I recognize a stark difference in personalities. Don’t get me wrong, New Yorkers have their own special charm, but it’s hard to find friendlier more easy going people than you do in the Midwest and Cleveland is no exception. Everyone I bumped into was so friendly!
4. The Cost
It’s no secret that traveling can be expensive, even when it’s just domestic. So when you find a city that offers so much to see and do AND it doesn’t break the bank, that’s a win win! I found Cleveland to be such an affordable city. Sure, you could splurge on a fancy meal or nice hotel, but if you’re traveling on a budget, there will still be plenty for you to see and do. For example, that food festival I mentioned was $20 and included a meal and drink ticket. Some of Cleveland’s other main attractions like the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Botanical Garden are under $30. And there’s also a lot to do for free like visiting the Cleveland sign and a number of nature parks.
5. The Food
Aside from the beach, Cleveland’s other main draws for me was the food. There are a TON of cute eateries throughout the city. Grab a doughnut and a beer at Brewnuts or enjoy a boozy brunch at the popular Town Hall (pictured above). Indulge in Cleveland’s best barbeque at Mabel’s BBQ. And for an upscale dining, head to the Marble Room and sip on a craft cocktail while enjoying their raw bar. If you simply can’t decide, head over to the West Side Market. There you’ll find a variety of options to satisfy just about every craving.
6. The Fun
I was kind of shocked by how much there is to see and do in Cleveland. Aside from enjoying the outdoors at the Edgewater Beach, there are several great parks along the Rocky River. If you want to enjoy nature while staying a bit closer to the city, check out the Cleveland Botanical Garden. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is another popular attraction and should definitely be on your Cleveland itinerary.
7. The Nightlife
In addition to its attractions to keep you entertained throughout the day, its nightlife does not disappoint. There are several bars and clubs that offer great after hour entertainment and are definitely worth checking out if you’re not ready to call it a night. For cocktails, small bites, music with a view, check out the Azure Rooftop Lounge. Or head to the Velvet Tango Room for specialty cocktails and live jazz. Cleveland’s trendy Warehouse District is also where you’ll find a ton of fun late-night spots.
