You guys! I’m so excited that after years of trial and error I can finally say that I’ve found the perfect skin care routine! A few months back I incorporated the Saranghae 5 step routine into my daily regimen and had great results. But I wanted to take things to the next level and actually talk with an expert to see if there was more I could do. Luckily, my good friend Jessica Niemann is a medical aesthetician and was eager to help! I met up with her at the Salon Lofts in Indy to try a few different treatments and get her expertise on how to improve the overall look and health of my skin.
I’ll be honest, I haven’t always been good to my skin. Sure, I’m diligent about wearing sunscreen, removing my makeup before bed and moisturizing nightly. But that’s no match for the frequent travel, city living, lack of sleep and hydration and regular recreational drinking (just bein honest!) that I put my skin through.
For the most part, I’ve gotten away with not making my skin a top priority. But as I’ve settled into my early thirties, I recognize that it’s time to start taking my skincare more seriously. The only problem is knowing where to start! There are some women who have a 20 step routine and an innate understanding of what products and treatments to use. I am not one of those women. I want a routine that’s quick, easy, effective and if doesn’t break the bank that’s an added bonus! Fortunately, with the help of Jessica I was able to come up with a plan to keep my skin looking young and healthy that is also quick and easy. I think you’ll find helpful too! Here are her tips:
TREATMENTS
If you’re like me, the vast array skin care treatments – Lasers, fillers, Botox, heat, needling, nips and tucks – are overwhelming. According to Jessica, the best treatment for achieving healthy, younger looking skin is peels. That might sound scary, but after having one I can tell you there is nothing to fear. In fact, the experience was quite relaxing and the results were immediate and will only get better over time. I did the following three treatments and so far I’m loving how my skin looks and feels.
Dermaplaning – This process gently removes dead skin cells and facial peace fuzz with a micro blade. It smooths out the skin allowing for better absorption of products and makeup application.
I was nervous about this one at first because I didn’t want to look like a werewolf when the hair returned. But luckily, this process doesn’t change the hair follicle so the hair doesn’t grow back any darker or thicker.
PCA detox gel peel with extractions & steam – This treatment is performed on the congested areas of the face – mainly the t-zone where there tend to be more clogged pores. This process helps soften the pores, open them up and clean them out.
SkinMedica vitalizing peel – This is where the magic happens! Chemical peels cause the skin to release old damaged cells, stimulate new cell growth and reveal bright, rejuvenated skin. As babies, our skin does this naturally every 28 days, but as we age the process slows. The SkinMedica peel helps to kick start that process and can be tailored to individual skin types for maximum results.
This trio of treatments that I did ranges between $100-$150 per session and should be performed every 4-6 weeks.
PRODUCTS
To ensure quality and results, it’s best to purchase products from a skin care professional. Although there are some over the counter products that are effective as well, they will likely have more fillers and less potent ingredients. Whether you decide to save or splurge, the following products are a good place to start. (I’ve also shared some above to give you an idea of brands and price points.)
AHA/BHA cleanser or a salicylic/glycolic blend cleanser – This keeps pores clean and removes dead cells from the skin’s surface.
Night serum – A nightly serum with Retinol helps generate new cell growth and boost collagen production.
Day serum – Day serums containing vitamin C create a barrier to protect the skin from free radicals, environmental pollutants and help improve the skin’s overall brightness.
Moisturizer – A daily moisturizer with SPF (at least 30) is important to keep the skin hydrated and shielded from harsh UV rays. It also creates a layer between makeup and your skin.
Powder Sunscreen – The power of sunscreen comes from re-application. It’s great if your moisturizer contains SPF, but there’s no easy way to re-apply especially if you have a full face of makeup on. Powder sunscreens solve that problem. It can be applied on top of makeup and re-applied throughout the day. Many are even tinted, which gives an added glow!
THE 70/30 RULE
One of the most encouraging things I learned from Jessica was the 70/30 rule. Meaning, only 30% of your skin’s health and appearance is determined by treatments performed by your aesthetician. The other 70% is up to you! That may sound daunting, but I like the idea that the main factors that impact my skin are in my control.
You probably already know what they are – diet, exercise, sleep and hydration! It seems obvious, but maintaining a balanced lifestyle can be easier said than done. It just takes a little discipline.
I’m so thankful to Jessica for sharing her 15 years of experience with me and helping me come up with a quick, easy and effective skincare routine that fits my needs. I feel like I finally have a plan that’s going to keep my skin looking young and healthy for years to come!
