I’ve been fascinated by the Kentucky Derby for years. The history, pomp and circumstance, fashion, drama, and sheer excitement all amounts to the greatest 2 minutes in sports. I look forward to watching derby day coverage and listening to the compelling storylines of the jockeys and their horses. And of course, I’m always on the lookout for the wildest ensemble from the hats to the dresses, it’s a site to behold.
After years of observing the race from the comfort of my living room, I will finally get to experience this century old tradition live and in person. This weekend, I will be caravanning with a group of friends to Louisville to attend the 142nd running of the Kentucky Derby. Although I have watched the derby for many years, I had a lot of questions about attending the race. Luckily, was able to answer most of them and can now share the info that I’ve found helpful in preparing for the big event. For those of you planning to attend this year’s race, or just want to learn more, here is a first timer’s guide to the Kentucky Derby!
WHAT IS THE KENTUCKY DERBY
The Kentucky Derby is the longest running sport in American history, with the first race taking place in 1875. Each year, upwards of 150,000 spectators flock to Churchill Downs to take part in this historic event. The 1 and a quarter mile long race lasts only a couple minutes, leading to the derby’s nickname “the most exciting 2 minutes in sports”.
This is the first race in the Triple Crown series followed by the Preakness and Belmont Stakes. 20 horses run in the derby, each one earning their spot by competing in 35 preliminary races throughout the world. In addition to advancing with a leg up in the remaining Triple Crown contests, the winner also receives a traditional garland of roses, a 2 million dollar purse and their name forever etched in the history books.
WHEN IS IT
The Kentucky Derby is held each year on the 1st Saturday in May. Although the race doesn’t start until 6:30pm, the gates open at 8am and spectators arrive early to place bets, explore the grounds and of course sip on traditional mint juleps!
WHERE DOES IT TAKE PLACE
The derby takes place in Louisville, Kentucky at the historic Churchill Downs track, recognized for its famous twin spires.
GETTING THERE
There is plenty of fun to be had once inside, but getting to the track requires some pre-planning. Parking on the grounds isn’t an option unless you purchased a spot well in advance. Not to worry, shuttles are available from 3 pickup locations and don’t require a reservation. Prices vary between $15 to $20 roundtrip. You can also take an Uber or park and walk. More details on getting to and from the track can be found here.
WHAT TO BRING
Given the high profile of this event, there are strict guidelines as to what spectators are allowed to bring. Alcohol is prohibited along with purses over 12 inches in any dimension and cameras with detachable lenses (sorry bloggers!). Beverages, snacks, small coolers and chairs are allowed so long as they comply with certain parameters. The full list of permitted and prohibited items can be found here.
WHAT TO WEAR
Perhaps even more important than the race itself is the fashion. The Kentucky Derby is a big to-do and people spend months planning their outfits for the big day!
Ladies typically wear sun-dresses, although elegant suits and rompers are also appropriate. Heels are great for photos, but keep in mind you will be on your feet for several hours so tuck a pair of flats in your tote for later!
As for the gents, it’s preppy all the way. Seersucker suits, Sperrys, pastels and bow ties are the name of the game.
Be sure to check the forecast before you go. Early May weather in Kentucky can be unpredictable and you don’t want to spend the day sweating or freezing!
IT’S ALL ABOUT THE HATS
Hats are a mandatory part of every ladies outfit and, in addition to the race itself, they’re what everyone comes to see! Your hat, or fascinator, is an opportunity to flaunt your style and creativity. Nothing is over the top as evidenced by these past derby goers.
There are many small businesses dedicated to crafting custom made creations for this very special event. But if you’re not interested in dropping hundreds on a head piece, Etsy has some beautiful options. And if you’re in a crafty mood, you can make your own! I am very excited about my custom piece. Check out my Instagram this Saturday for the big reveal!
Now that the planning is almost complete, I can relax and look forward to the festivities – betting, horses, large crowds, mint juleps and hats for days! Hopefully this list gives you an idea of what to expect on derby day. For more information on planning your trip and the history of the race, visit the Kentucky Derby’s official website.
