I always say I’ll know exactly what I should have packed once I return from a trip. Unfortunately, this proved to be true on my recent visit to Peru. Despite checking the forecast beforehand, I allowed the unseasonably warm weather at home influence my packing decisions.
While my Russian and the other couple we traveled with managed to pack appropriately, I definitely missed the memo! For some reason, I pictured us all frolicking along sun drenched beaches and dining at outdoor cafes on balmy evenings. So, rather than packing comfy boots, cozy sweaters and lots of layers like I should have, I found myself with an overstuffed bag full of shorts, sandals and flowy dresses. All cute and utterly useless!
A hazy day in Lima, Peru…
It was about 40 degrees when we arrived in Lima and I very quickly realized just how accurate those chilly weather predictions had been! We spent a few days exploring Miraflores and although temperatures reached the upper 60’s during the day, by evening it dropped into the low 30’s. Needless to say, everything I brought looked adorable hanging in the hotel closet, which is exactly where it all stayed!
When we ventured to Cusco for the second half of our trip, trying to find a weather appropriate outfit in my bag full of summer wear proved even trickier. This quaint mountain town is nestled in Andes at an elevation of 11,200ft making for stunning views and unpredictable weather.
Plaza de Armas in Cusco after the rain…
November is spring in South America and marks the start of rainy season there. On most days, we were greeted by warm and sunny mornings followed by breezy and cold afternoons, not to mention the daily pop-up rain showers that just added to the fun! Luckily, there were several vendors at the ready with plastic ponchos to cater to unprepared visitors like myself!
Evenings in Cusco were down right freezing and on several occasions I had to throw fashion to the wind and opt for comfort by wrapping myself in my travel blanket like a make-shift poncho before heading out for dinner. I looked a little ridiculous, but couldn’t have cared less! Although I was pitifully ill prepared for this trip, I learned a valuable lesson and now know just what to pack for Peru should I ever return. So, here is my list of items I SHOULD have taken with me on my amazing trip and what you should definitely include if you’re venturing to Peru in the fall or spring!
1. Poncho ~ Burberry
2. Lips (not essential, but never a bad idea!)~ Mac
3. Sweater ~All Saints
4. Infinity scarf ~ H&M
5. Umbrella ~ Hunter
6. Riding boots ~ Frye
7. Denim ~ Michael Kors
