Before my trip to Morocco, one of my main questions was “what do I wear?” Given that Morocco is a predominately Muslim country, I knew I would need to dress more conservatively than usual.
As a general rule of thumb, it is considered a sign of respect for women to keep their knees and shoulders covered. While you will see some wearing more revealing attire, I prefer to err on the safe side and dress more modestly.
On days that I did wear a tank top, I make sure to have a scarf on hand in case I felt the need to cover up or if we ventured into more conservative venues. With a little thought and pre-planning, I managed to pull several outfits together for my 7 day trip.
I had a mix of pieces I rented, some that I purchased for the trip and items I already had in my closet. All were appropriately modest, but still made me feel stylish and beautiful. Hopefully my packing list will help you prepare for your trip to Morocco!
TRIP DETAILS
Location: Marrakech, Essaouira & the Agafay Desert
Season: Early Fall (first week of September)
Weather: Sunny and mid 90’s daily. It was quite hot and dry throughout the trip! Although temps drop to the mid 80’s by the coast in Essaouira, it is still quite hot during the day. Evenings in the desert tend to be cooler, in the low 70’s, so you’ll want to have a light jacket or shawl on hand.
DAYTIME LOOKS
We spent our days out and about shopping in the bustling souks of Marrakech and touring historical sites around the city. I went with flowy maxis, t-shirt dresses and loose fitting linen pants for our daytime outings.
COASTAL LOOKS
We spent a couple days in Morocco’s coastal town of Essaouira. The cooler temperatures and seaside views were a welcome change from the heat and hustle and bustle of Marrakech. I went with more casual looks – white pants with colorful blouses, flowy day dresses and jumpsuits – for our relaxed days on the coast.
EVENING LOOKS
In the evenings, we enjoyed lovely dinners at some of the best restaurants in Marrakech and Essaouira. I opted for dressier dresses and flowy blouses for our evenings out.
DESERT LOOKS
We concluded our trip with a night in Morocco’s Agafay Desert. We arrived in the afternoon and took a quick dip in the pool before our sunset camel ride through the desert. I selected some relaxed looks – t-shirt dresses and linen pants with tanks and a flowing maxi to watch the sunrise. For the camel ride, I wore a colorful, flowy jumpsuit that I picked up at the market in Essaouira.
SWIMWEAR
You’ll definitely want to throw a few swimsuits and cover-ups in your bag! Many of the riads in Marrakech have stunningly beautiful pools where you can cool down after long days spent exploring the city. But you’ll want to leave your skimpier bikinis at home. I brought my one piece suits and a couple high wasted two pieces on the trip.
OTHER PACKING ESSENTIALS
Footwear: I did throw a pair of heels and wedges in my bag, but I ended up living in my sandals for most of the trip. You’ll be doing a lot of walking, so having several pairs of comfy sandals is key. We also ended up buying several pairs in the souks. At $10 bucks a pop, they were a steal!
Scarves & Outerwear: It does get a bit chilly in the evenings especially on the coast and in the desert. I was glad to have my denim jacket and several scarves on those cooler nights in Morocco.
Accessories: I also made sure to pack some necessary accessories – hats and sunglasses – and some fun items like my tassel earrings as well (I ordered a 36 pack from Amazon!). I also LOVE, LOVE, LOVED wearing my new Sora Nomad half moon bag. It was the perfect size to fit all my essentials throughout the day and the versatile strap allowed me to style it multiple ways
Personal Care: Be sure to pack a the following beauty essentials in your toiletry bag as well – face wipes, sunscreen and moisturizer are a MUST! I also picked up a little first aid kid to have on hand just in case.
I think that just about covers it! I actually had a lot of fun planning out my packing list for this trip. As you can see, it’s possible to look cute and stylish while still adhering to the cultural norms of beautiful Morocco!
