If you’re planning a trip to Morocco, you’re going to want to visit multiple cities. Marrakech, Fes, Chefchaouen, Rabat and Casablanca are good ones to consider, but I suggest adding the coastal town of Essaouira (pronounced es-ew-e-ra) to your list!
We kicked off our recent trip to Morocco in Marrakech. After three days exploring the bustling Médina, we were ready to slow things down and enjoy a more relaxed setting. Essaouira was the perfect place to do just that!
This adorable beach town has it all – great restauants, cute shopping, beach views and night life. Keep on reading for my tips on how to spend a weekend in Essaouira!

GETTING THERE
Essaouira is located along Morocco’s southwest coast just 2.5 hours from Marrakech. There are a few options for getting there!
Bus
The most economical option is the bus. For $7.50 you can book yourself a seat with one of Morocco’s two main bus companies, either CTM or Supratours.
These buses are safe and nicer than you might think. All are equipped with air conditioning, footrests, reclining seats, and personalized lighting. There are 2 departures a day and the ride takes 2.5 hours.
Shuttle
Daily shuttles are available for $14. The ride takes 3 hours and includes 1 stop for snacks/restroom.
Private Taxi
If you prefer a bit more comfort and flexibility, you can also book a private taxi. You can reserve one in advance, just be prepared to negotiate Separately with your driver. If you’re patient enough, you could get a ride for as little as $60.
WHERE TO STAY
There are plenty of great options when it comes to finding accommodations in Essaouira. From cozy riads to rooftop pools, there is something for every type of traveler. I’ve listed a few options below:
Budget Friendly
The Emeraude Riad Essaouira offers rooms for as low as $36 a night. This airy hotel features colorful Moroccan touches and a rooftop patio perfect for watching the sunset.
High End Luxury
Heure Bleue features a stunning rooftop pool, plush furnishings and attention to detail to make your stay pure bliss.
Something in Between
The Atlas Essaouira & Spa is another great option a bit farther down the coast. Take a dip in the expansive pool and enjoy ocean views at this beachfront property.
We stayed at the Madada Mogador and I really liked it! We had a great patio where we enjoyed our complimentary breakfasts in the morning and a beautiful spa on the main floor. It was also perfectly located within walking distance to the beach and the city’s main attractions.
WHERE TO EAT
There are a TON of eateries in Essaouira, some better than others. But I picked out a few that I think are worth checking out!
Lunch
Bar Miramar is located right on the beach and has fun cocktails and casual vibes.
Mega Loft Ottoman Chic Cafe, Resto and Gallery is another great lunch locale.
Dinner
Mumtaz Mahal is a cozy Lebanese spot with hummus that’s to die for!
La Table Madada is the place to go for an upscale dining experience. We enjoyed a lovely dinner here. My salt encrusted cod left me speechless and the lemon tart was perfection!
Dessert
Cafe Italien Dolcefredo is located on the main square and serves up some of the best gelato in Essaouira!
WHAT TO DO
Beach Day
Grab a good book and a beach chair and spend the day lounging. Chair rentals are available up and down the beach for about $7 a day.
Essaouira’s beach is known for being exceptionally windy, which makes it a favorite among kite surfers.
Travel Tip: Although you’ll see plenty of ladies in two pieces, I suggest leaving your bikini’s behind. Given Morocco’s conservative culture, it’s just better to err on the side of caution and not draw unnecessary attention. My post on what to pack for Morocco can give some outfit ideas!
Shopping
Essaouira has a wonderful Médina that is much more manageable than Marrakech. The city is known for its silver and you can find some great deals on one of a kind pieces. Just be prepared put your bargaining skills to work.
To give you a sense, one of the girls on our trip picked up a beautiful silver ring with small turquoise stones for $25.
Sightseeing
Essaouira was a filming location for Game of Thrones and there are a ton of beautiful areas to explore. One is the Skala Kasbah, a fortified wall built to defend the city from attack.
The other is the Scala Harbor where you’ll find the door of the port featuring symbols of the Muslim, Jewish and Christian faiths, which represents tolerance. You can also watch fisherman bring in the fresh catches of the day. Just be warned, you might need to hold your nose!
Nightlife
For me, no trip is complete without a little dancing! On our last night in Essaouira, my roommate Jess and I enjoyed an evening out at Le Club. This rooftop spot on the main square had a live band, dj and very fun beach vibes.
Travel tip: I don’t recommend venturing here alone. Just use common sense, be mindful of your purse and drinks and be prepared to receive attention from the gents. But most importantly, HAVE FUN!
I hope this post gives you some ideas on how to enjoy a weekend in Essaouira! I had a great time and definitely think you should add this beach town to your Morocco itinerary!
