It’s no secret that a tropical getaway is a fabulous way to unwind and spend those hard earned vacation days. The problem can be deciding where go to! Below are my top five picks for quick island vacays.
1. PUERTO RICO
There is so much to see and do in Puerto Rico that one weekend may not be enough time! There is delicious food, great nightlife, endless shopping, national parks and of course gorgeous beaches. To make the most of your trip, a rental car is a must. Accommodations are also very affordable. You can rent an apartment in Old San Juan for under $100 a night! This island does not have all-inclusives so rentals are a great way to go!
2. BAHAMAS
For those looking for a more cookie cutter island experience, then the Bahamas is for you! Given that it is a major cruise port, much of the island is catered to tourists. You’ll find local markets and souvenir shops where you can purchase everything from handcrafted soaps to shot glasses. There are endless activities available ranging from snorkel tours to spending the day at the Atlantis water park. This island is great for families as well as those looking for a less adventurous experience.
3. DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
Known for its fabulous all-inclusive resorts, DR is a great destination for couples looking to relax and unwind. It has some stunning beaches, incredible nightlife and yummy food. One thing to note is that you probably won’t want to venture off the hotel grounds unless you’re with an organized tour. This can be relaxing, but may not be ideal for those interested in exploring. Regardless, there is no shortage of fun on this beautiful island!
4. ST. MAARTEN
The beautiful island of St. Maarten is unique in that it consists of two separate territories, one Dutch owned, the other French. The island has many beaches including Maho Bay (pictured above). Located directly in front of the Island’s only airport runway, you can watch planes take off and land directly overhead. Orient bay is another beach not to be missed for those interested in nude sunbathing. Aside from its beaches, this island is great because it is incredibly easy to get around. Rental cars are inexpensive and there are a ton of options for dining and nightlife.
5. ST. THOMAS
I’ve visited this island many times and it is one of my favorite easy island getaways. There are numerous beaches scattered throughout the island. Sapphire Bay (featured above) is one of my favorites because of its stunning turquoise waters and excellent snorkeling. This island is also a cruise port so if you’re a shopper, you’ll find plenty of local markets, jewelry stores, and souvenir shops where you can snag some local goods. It is also known for its coral reefs and many tours available for you divers out there!
As you can see, there are SO many great options for quick island getaways! Whether you’re looking for adventure or would prefer to relax and soak up the sun, it’s hard to go wrong with any of these beautiful destinations! Happy beaching…and wending!
