Madrid is a bustling metropolis rich in history and full of museums, elegant architecture, excellent restaurants great shopping, and futbol fenatics. While it is often overshadowed by Barcelona and other coastal cities, Madrid should definitely not be overlooked. Below are my top five must do’s on your next trip to Spain’s capital city.
1. STROLL THROUGH PARQUE DE EL RETIRO
Madrid’s Retiro Park is a beautiful oasis that provides a respite for tourists and locals alike. Take a stroll along one of the many trails, explore the Palacio de Cristal or enjoy a leisurely paddle boat ride in Retiro Pond. Just south of the park is the Real Jardin Botanico. Here you’ll find sprawling gardens and meticulously manicured trees that will make you feel like you’ve stepped into a Dr. Seuss book! There is something for everyone to enjoy and this park should not be missed!
2. EAT TAPAS
One of the treats of visiting Spain is being able to dine on some of the most delicious food. Madrid has hundreds of restaurants serving up mouth watering dishes such as paella, fresh seafood and steak. But my favorite has to be tapas, or small plates, because you get a little bit of everything! Try some creamy croquettes, braised oxtail, chorizo & quail egg flat bread or better yet have it ALL! Add a pitcher of sangria and you’ve got the perfect meal!
3. EXPLORE THE PALACIO REAL
Another attraction that should not be missed is the Royal Palace. Once home to Madrid’s royal families, the palace has been transformed into a museum. For about 10 euros you can explore this majestic structure. Wander from room to room and admire the intricate details of the living quarters, dining halls and thrones. Marvel at the extensive silver, fine china, weapons and armor collections.
4. VISIT PUETA DEL SOL
Madrid is known for its many plazas, but one that should be on every visitor’s list is the Puerta del Sol or Gate of the Sun. This is the city’s center and is full of endless activities. Here you’ll find street performers, souvenir shops, delicious bakeries, stunning architecture and much more! Day or night, this plaza is full of energy and surprises.
5. ATTEND A FLAMENCO SHOW
One should not leave Madrid without witnessing a live Flamenco show. This centuries old folk music is expressed through guitar, song and most notably, dance. This unique style is characterized by its sensuality, passion, emotion and intensity. For my birthday last year, I had the treat of attending a live show at the famed Corral de la Moreria. Sipping sangria and admiring the art in motion was definitely a highlight of my visit!
