It goes without saying that Venice is an iconic city. Known for its intricate canals, history and architecture, there truly is no other place quite like it in the world. It had been near the top of my bucket list for years so I was thrilled when I finally had a chance to visit! Not that anyone needs convincing, but in case you do here are my top 5 reasons to visit Venice.
1. PICTURESQUE VIEWS
As soon as you step off the plane, this city takes your breath away. From gondolas docked in a row, to the centuries old buildings still standing along Venice’s many canals, everywhere you look there’s a photo op.
2. LEATHER GOODS
If you’re interested in shopping, Venice will not disappoint. There are dozens of adorable boutiques scattered throughout Venice’s secret alleyways where you can find handcrafted leather goods.
3. IT’S SINKING
Venice was built entirely on water and is supported only by large wooden beams. This gave rise to its nickname, the “floating city”. Despite its renowned architectural achievement, Venice is slowly sinking. Every morning, when the tide comes in, the city becomes submerged. Risers are placed in the streets to provide a dry walkway for residents and visitors alike. If you’re planning to visit Venice, be sure to pack your rain boots!
4. GELATO
Whether you visit when it’s warm or cold, gelato is an Italian sweet treat that can be enjoyed year round. There are dozens of gelaterias in Venice where you can indulge.
5. ROMANCE
Venice is one of the most romantic cities in the world. There are countless candlelit cafes, violinists can be heard playing in the piazza and cozy gondolas provide scenic tours of this whimsical city. Venice provides the perfect setting to enjoy with your significant other.
