WHAT TO SEE AND DO IN MARRAKECH, MOROCCO: AN ITINERARY FOR YOUR FIRST TRIP

What to see and do in Marrakech, Morocco

The ancient city of Marrakech (also spelled Marrakesh), located in the heart of Morocco, is a feast for the senses. It is as unique as it is beautiful, but it can also be overwhelming. The chaos of the Medina, the sweet aroma of mint and incense wafting through the air, the stunning architecture and the bustling souks can be a lot to take in.

But no need to worry. With a bit of prep and planning you’ll be ready to dive right in to this fascinating city and hit the ground running! Check out my first timer’s guide to visiting Morocco and Read on for my tips on what to see and do in Marrakech on your first trip.

Luxury riad hotel in Marrakech, Morocco

WHERE TO STAY

The first stop you’ll make upon arriving in Marrakech is your hotel. There are several options for accommodations in the city, but I recommend staying in a riad inside the Medina (old city). Riads are guesthouses that have been converted from family homes. They are beautiful works of art that provide a peaceful escape from the chaos of the Medina.

Riads can range in price, but many are quite affordable (less than $100 night) and still offer luxurious amenities like rooftop decks, pools and spa services. I’ve listed a few of my favorites below!

Travel Tip: Because Morocco is a Muslim country, not all riads serve alcohol. Just call in advance to make sure! We stayed in two different riads during my trip, both of which were stunning, and I loved returning after a hectic day wandering through the city and enjoying a glass of wine on the rooftop.

Riad El Walla & Spa

This beautiful riad was our home away from home the first three days of our trip. It offered a beautiful pool and sitting area, relaxing rooftop, full bar and delicious breakfasts each morning. (Rooms start at $60)

Riad Ambre et Epices

We ended our trip with a night at this riad. I loved the ornate pool and three-tiered rooftop terrace. It was the perfect place to relax and listen to the sounds of the city. (Rooms start at $92)

Riad BE Marrakech

This Riad features stunning attention to detail with an Insta-worthy pool, cozy rooftop, a luxurious spa and yoga studio! When I return, I’ll be booking a room here! (Rooms start at $105)

Riad Due

Enjoy instant relaxation with a cool dip in the pool, or a sip of tea by the fireplace. This quirky riad is a wonderful escape! (Rooms start at $187)

Demeures D’Orient Luxury Riad & Spa

This 5 star guest house is a stunner. Featuring a large heated pool, wrap around rooftop terrace, luxury spa and hammam located in the heart of the Medina. (Rooms start at $218)

Riad Dar Anika

With it’s beautiful rooms, relaxing rooftop, refreshing pool and exquisite service, you’ll feel like royalty at this boutique riad. (Rooms start at $283)

Riad Yasmine

If you’re an avid Instagrammer, chances are you’ve come across photos of this Riad. It’s stunning turquoise tiled pool is the focal point of this luxurious retreat. (Rooms start at $104)

What to see and do on your first trip to Marrakech

WHAT TO SEE & DO

Koutoubia Mosque

The Koutoubia Mosque is the largest mosque in Marrakech. It is one of the city’s most important landmarks located near the central square. Although non-Muslims are not permitted to enter, it is definitely worth visiting and just walking the grounds that surround it.

Bahia Palace

The Bahia Palace is one the jewels of Marrakech. This stunning palace is an architectural wonder built in the late 19th century.

I’ve heard from many people that they’ve had difficulties visiting either because it was closed or they couldn’t find it! We went with a guide, so our visit was seamless. I suggest either booking a tour or purchasing tickets in advance so you do not miss out on this must see attraction.

Le Jardin Secret

Spend some time wandering through the beautiful green spaces at Le Jardin Secret. It was restored in the 19th century and features both an exotic garden and traditional Islamic garden. General admission is 60 dirhams. You can visit the tower for an additional 35 dirhams.

Jemaa el-Fna Square

Take in the sights and sounds of the city’s main square. Jemaa el-Fna is also known as “the square of nobody” because it is always filled with people, but they’re all strangers. You’ll find everything from restaurants and rooftop bars to snake charmers and souvenir stands. It’s the beating heart of the city.

YSL Museum

Fashion lovers will want to add a visit to the YSL Museum to their itinerary. The museum opened in 2017 and is dedicated to the life and creations of the famed designer Yves Saint Laurent. Morocco was a major source of inspiration for the designer, which is why it was selected as one of the two locations for the YSL museums (the other is located in Paris, France).

Shop in the Souks

It’s impossible to visit Marrakech and leave empty handed. You’ll find just about anything your heart desires in the souks – clothing, shoes, purses, leather goods, jewelry, housewares, antiques, spices, rugs, textiles and SO MUCH MORE! Just be prepared to haggle! I recommend spending some time just browsing and taking it all in before you start buying. Because once you start it’s very hard to stop!

Ménara Mall

For more traditional shopping options, visit the Ménara Mall located in the new city.

Spas

If you need a break from the hustle and bustle of the Medina, enjoy a luxurious day at the spa or try a traditional hammam treatment. Here are a few good options: Les Bains de Marrakech, Farntatchi Spa & Royal Mansour Marrakech

WHERE TO EAT

I wasn’t that familiar with Moroccan cuisine prior to my trip, but it didn’t take long for me to fall in love! I’ve listed a few of the places we dined at on our trip, but this barely scratches the surface of the excellent dining options Marrakech has to offer.

Cafe Des Epices ($)

We stopped here for lunch on our first day in Marrakech. They had yummy soups, sandwiches and juices and a great view of the outdoor souk from the rooftop terrace.cute lunch spot

Amal ($)

Amal started out as a training center for local women – offering culinary and restaurant management skill that they could use to lift themselves out of poverty. It is now a full time restaurant run entirely by local women!

Nomad ($$)

You’ll find modern Moroccan options at Nomad along with stunning views of the mountains and Medina. It’s a great spot for lunch or dinner.

Arkech ($$)

If you’re looking for a fun spot to spend happy hour or enjoy a night cap, the rooftop bar of Arkech is a good place to start! It’s located in the new city and has a modern Miami vibe.

Comptoir Darna ($$$)

Right next door to Arkech is Comptoir Darna. They serve elevated Moroccan cuisine and every bite is mouthwatering. In addition to their delicious dishes, you’ll be treated to a belly dancing performance and live entertainment each night!

Terrasse Des Epices ($$$)

If you want to enjoy a delicious meal, amazing cocktails and live music at sunset, book a table at Terrasse Des Epices. This hip rooftop restaurant is modern, elegant and located right inside the Medina.

OTHER TIPS

Getting Around

Plan to do A LOT of walking. It’s the easiest way to get around and if you’re staying inside the medina, it’s the only way as cars are not allowed. However to reach some places outside the Medina like the YSL Museum and restaurants in the new city, you’ll need to take a cab which means haggling!

Most rides shouldn’t cost more than 50 to 100 dirhams ($5 to $10 dollars), but you’ll have to really haggle your way to that price. Having smaller bill on hand will make it easier, that way you can hold up your cash and tell the driver that’s all you have rather than relying on him to make change.

Navigating Marrakech can be a bit tricky, especially inside the Medina, which is a maze! I suggest downloading a city map in advance. Maps.me is a great app to use for that!

Money, Money, Money, Money

There are several ATMs and money exchanges located throughout Marrakech. I recommend having 500 to 1000 dirhams ($50 to $100 dollars) on hand daily. If you plan on doing extensive shopping, you’ll need to take out more.

What to Wear

Morocco is hot and a conservative country, so you’ll want to wear things that are flowy but also cover your knees and shoulders. I suggest maxi dresses, linen pants and loose fitting tops. For more tips, check out my post on what to wear when visiting Morocco!
